There is no HP method, no Dell method and no Lenovo method. A laptop runs Windows, macOS or Chrome OS, and YouTube gets blocked at the operating system or the network — the brand on the lid changes nothing. If you searched for your specific brand, you are in the right place; you just need the section that matches the operating system.
What genuinely is different about a laptop is that it leaves the house. Every network-level method — router blocking, DNS filtering, OpenDNS — stops the moment your child joins school Wi-Fi, a friend's network, or their own phone hotspot. That single fact rules out most of the advice written for desktops, and it is what this guide is organised around.

Two conclusions fall out of it. First, anything configured on your router is a second layer for a laptop, never the only layer. Second, a browser extension is not a control — it is uninstalled from the same menu it was installed from, in two clicks, by a nine-year-old.
Step 0: Make the Account a Standard User
Do this before anything else, on every operating system. On Windows: Settings > Accounts > Other users (or Family), select your child's account, Change account type, choose Standard User. On macOS: System Settings > Users & Groups, click ⓘ, and switch off Allow this user to administer this computer.
On a Standard account your child cannot edit the hosts file, install a VPN, install a different browser, or switch off the parental controls. On an Administrator account they can do all four in under two minutes, and every method below becomes a polite suggestion. This one change does more than everything else on this page combined.
How to Block YouTube on a Windows 11 or Windows 10 Laptop
Windows gives you two device-level routes. Use both.
The hosts file (works in every browser, travels with the laptop):
- Press Start, type Notepad, right-click it and choose Run as administrator
- File > Open, set the file-type dropdown to All Files, and open

Family Safety's web filtering only enforces in Microsoft Edge, and it blocks other browsers wholesale rather than filtering them. The MacBook-specific point is the portability one: Screen Time travels with the laptop, router filtering does not. If your Mac block relies on OpenDNS at home, it does nothing at school.
How to Block YouTube on a Chromebook Laptop

HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus: What Actually Differs
Nothing, for blocking purposes — but three brand-level things are worth knowing.
Pre-installed "parental control" trialware. Many consumer laptops ship with a bundled security suite that includes a web filter on a 30-day trial. It will stop filtering when the trial lapses, usually without an obvious warning, and parents often discover months later that the block quietly expired. Either pay for it deliberately or uninstall it and use a method above.
Manufacturer recovery partitions. A factory reset from the recovery partition wipes your parental controls along with everything else, and on most laptops it is reachable from the boot menu without a password. This is a real bypass route for a determined teenager. A BIOS/UEFI supervisor password blocks access to the boot menu, and is set in the firmware setup screen (F2, F10 or Del at power-on, brand depending).
BIOS access generally. The same supervisor password prevents booting from a USB stick, which otherwise lets a child run an entirely different operating system off a thumb drive and ignore everything you configured.
Add the Network Layer Too — Just Don't Rely On It
At home, router-level filtering is still worth setting up. It covers the devices you cannot install anything on — the console, the smart TV, a visiting friend's tablet — and it catches the laptop whenever it is on your Wi-Fi.

How Kids Bypass Laptop Blocks
- A phone hotspot. The most common bypass, and it defeats every network method instantly. Only a device-level control survives it.
- A VPN. Tunnels past hosts file, DNS and router blocking together. Blocked by a Standard account, since they cannot install one. See can a VPN bypass parental controls.
- A portable browser. Firefox and Chrome both have versions that run from a USB stick without installation, carrying their own settings and ignoring yours.
- DNS-over-HTTPS. Chrome and Firefox can route DNS lookups directly to Cloudflare, silently skipping your hosts file and router. Turn it off in each browser's security settings.
- Web proxies and YouTube front-ends. Endless mirror sites relay YouTube from domains you have never seen. This is the structural failure of blocklists, and the reason allowlisting exists.
- Editing the hosts file back. Thirty seconds, if they have admin rights.
The through-line is that a blocklist requires you to know every route in advance, and a laptop that travels gives your child networks you do not control on which to look for the ones you missed. An allowlist reverses it: nothing loads unless approved, so an unknown proxy is blocked by default, on any network.
